Description
Gente de Mezcal was founded in 2015 by Hardey Martinez, a Colombian industrial designer and Juan Carlos Muños Flores, a Mexico City native. They are an award-winning artisanal Mezcal producer, working directly with the Mezcal producing communities, ensuring recognition is given to Maestros and their Mezcals. They do this by uniting community, culture and conversation within their work. Gente de Mezcal are an award-winning Mezcal company, having received Gold and Double Gold awards at the San Francisco World Spirit Competition for the exceptional craftsmanship of their Mezcal.
Maestro, Aureliano Hernandez is a fifth generation Mezcalero. He has dedicated a lifetime to growing exquisite agaves, from the very seed to the final product, following in his family’s footsteps to express the artistry and knowledge of an ancestral tradition that is sustained generation after generation. This is represented in their small-batch emblematic productions which respects local scale production, meaning they have uniquely captured the essence of each agave plant variety in every bottle of Mezcal they make, shining the light on the individuality and flavour of each crop.
With sustainability at the forefront of their ethos, they use their own semi-cultivated agaves, which allows time for the land to heal and protects the future of agave crops. Their Mezcals are cultural treasures which preserve the flavours of Mexican pueblos. The piñas are cooked in underground ovens, crushed traditionally using a stone mill, and naturally fermented in wooden tubs before being distilled in copper stills.
